 Australian Stock ExchangeThe Australian Stock Exchange (also known as the Australian Securities Exchange) is the 8th largest Stock Market in the World. The ASX was formed from the merger of six separate Australian Stock Exchanges, Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. In 2006 the ASX merged with the Sydney Futures Exchange - the largest derivatives exchange in Australasia. The ASX is a publicly traded company and its shares are traded on the ASX.
The ASX offers a wide range of tradable instruments - Options & Futures, Low Exercise Price Options (LEPO), CFD's, Warrants and Bonds. Commodity Futures for grain, electricity and wool, and grain options are traded on the Derivative Trading Platform (DTP).
Market Trading hours are from 10am to 4pm AEST, with an auction period at 4:10pm. In 2006 the ASX replaced replaced the aging SEATS trading system with the more efficient Integrated Trading System (ITS).
About 2000 stocks are listed on the ASX, 1/5th of the market activity is from private investors. Limited Short Selling is allowed on the ASX, Naked short selling was banned in 2008. The most popular ASX stock index is the S&P/ASX 200, containing the 200 largest ASX listed companies by market cap.
