CHICAGO, April 22, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Currently only seven percent of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States will survive more than five years. More than 4,300 supporters will join the movement to Wage Hope and double pancreatic cancer survival by 2020 at #PurpleStride Chicago. The timed run and awareness walk will take place on Saturday, May 2 to raise awareness and funds to support the mission of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to advance research, support patients and create hope.

The day will honor pancreatic cancer survivors like Michael Weber who was diagnosed in August 2014. Since then, Michael has been utilizing the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to identify intuitions where he can receive treatments while traveling, as well as current information on the disease, from clinical trials, to diet and nutrition and symptom management. Michael will be attending PurpleStride with his team "Purple for Poppie" behind him, including his wife of 49 years, his three daughters, and his grandchildren who will be wearing purple for their "Poppie."

Participants will also be striding as a tribute to those who have passed away from the disease like Karen Steckbauer who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 33 more than 25 years ago. Karen's daughter Kelli Steckbauer, who was only eight years old when she lost her mother, has since joined the fight against pancreatic cancer. Kelli will be joined by friends and family in honor of her mother on event day.

"PurpleStride Chicago is an uplifting day meant to create hope and encouragement for people who've been affected by pancreatic cancer," said Steckbauer. "Funds raised help provide personalized support for patients and support research grants and advocacy efforts to increase federal pancreatic cancer research funding."
