Starbucks Corp. said late Friday it was working to put cash
registers back in service in its company-operated stores after a
broad outage in the U.S. and Canada.
The "outage was caused by a failure during a daily system
refresh," the coffee chain said, adding that its stores would
remain open and continue to serve customers.
It wasn't immediately clear how long the payment systems were
out of service or when they would function again.
Local media reports and social media comments said that some
Starbucks were giving away coffee free during the outage.
A spokesman for Starbucks didn't immediately respond to requests
for comment.
Starbucks directly operates about 7,400 stores in the U.S. and
1,000 in Canada.
