Ontario Power Generation's Eugenia Falls
Celebrates 100 Years of Service
EUGENIA, ON, July 3, 2015 /CNW/ - The Ontario Waterpower
Association (OWA) congratulates Ontario Power Generation (OPG) on
their upcoming centennial celebration of the Eugenia Falls
Generating Station to be held on July
4th, 2015. The construction of the Eugenia Falls
hydroelectric development was completed on November 18, 1915 and the official opening of the
plant for service was conducted by Sir Adam
Beck, the first Chairman of the Hydroelectric Commission of
Ontario.
"OPG has been and continues to be a leading organization in the
waterpower industry," said Paul
Norris, President of the OWA. "This centennial celebration
is an excellent example of the reliability and durability of the
province's primary source of affordable, renewable energy –
waterpower."
On July 4, 2015, the Eugenia Gold
Rush Festival will host power plant tours at the Eugenia Falls GS
from 11am – 3pm, situated in Beaver
Valley. A shuttle van will transport visitors to and from
the main events at the community park and the facility. OWA will be
supporting the event with a waterpower information booth.
"We are proud stewards of a number of historic, publically-owned
assets like the Eugenia Generating Station. Our job is to make sure
they are well maintained and safely operated. Hydro generation is a
big reason why 99.7 per cent of OPG's power is now free of
greenhouse gas and smog causing emissions," says Mike Martelli, OPG's Senior Vice President,
Hydro Thermal Operations.
Hydroelectric power is a timeless, renewable resource that has
fuelled Ontario's economic growth
since the beginning of the 20th century. Today, it accounts for
more than one-quarter of Ontario's
electricity production. Ontario's
waterpower industry is committed to ensuring that energy production
is reliable, safe and environmentally sustainable for Ontarians
today and for the future.
