Comments from HUI Research:
Retail sales increased by as much as 5.6 percent in June. It was
a very good sales month, after a slightly cooler development in
both April and May. Consumables increased by 2.1 percent while
durables alternated and showed its strongest growth so far this
year with an increase of 8.4 percent.
Almost all sub-sectors within durable goods noted a positive
growth, where several industries showed double-digit growth
figures. Among these were building materials, paint and books. The
summer was very hot last year, affecting the interest in building
or renovating; but many seem to prioritize building and renovating
again this year, which drives growth. Another industry that did
well in June was the clothing industry, and the growth of 9.6
percent in June made up for the loss in May.
According to the Retail Barometer from the Swedish Trade
Federation, retailer confidence fell in July from -16 to -21, which
is the lowest measured confidence this year. There are a few
sources of concern affecting the declining confidence, especially
profitability and employment. Retail is one of the industries that
is most affected by layoffs, and it is an industry with high
competition and price pressure. When the employer's payroll tax
increases, it will most likely affect retail. In contrast, sales
expectations for the coming months are still at a positive level.
Summing up the first six months this year, retail sales have
increased by 4.7 percent. This is a much stronger growth than
during the same period last year, when retail increased by 3.3
percent. HUI Research's full-year forecast of retail sales in 2015
is 4 percent.

Definitions and explanations
Total retail trade refers to NACE 47, excluding 47.3.
Trade in consumables here refers to NACE 47.11 and 47.2.
Durables here refer to NACE 47.19 and 47.4-47.7.
All time series use the year prior to the year of the survey as
their base year. Contact HUI Research for more detailed reports of
the retail trade activities.
Revisions
When the Retail Trade Index for a new month is published, the
index for previous months is also revised. For the last month a new
calculation has been made but other months may also be revised. The
material is normally revised for twelve months retroactively. This
is mainly due to new and revised information that has been
received. Working day adjusted figures, seasonally adjusted figures
and trend figures are always revised from January 1991 onwards.
