21st Century Fox increased the pay of Executive Chairman Rupert Murdoch and his sons, Chief Executive James Murdoch and Executive Chairman Lachlan Murdoch, citing their "exemplary achievements" and their "contributions to drive the overall success of the business."

In all, Rupert Murdoch made $34.6 million in 2016, up 24% from $27.9 million a year earlier. In July 2015, he stepped down as chief executive and his sons assumed elevated roles. James Murdoch became CEO and Lachlan Murdoch became executive chairman.

James Murdoch's pay increased to $26.4 million from $15.1 million a year earlier, when he was chief operating officer. Lachlan Murdoch made $23.7 million, compared with the $323,000 he made as a director.

21st Century Fox and News Corp, parent company of The Wall Street Journal, share common ownership.

Since July, Rupert Murdoch has also been chairman and acting CEO of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network after Roger Ailes stepped down in the wake of a sexual-harassment scandal.
