SYDNEY--Amazon.com Inc. said Thursday it would open another fulfillment center in Australia in the second half of this year, signaling its intention to continue expanding after bringing its full retail website to consumers here last year.

Amazon said its second facility, on a Goodman Group property, would be in southwest Sydney, and is designed to create faster shipping and increase its product range for Australian consumers. Amazon's existing fulfillment center in Australia is near Melbourne.

Although Amazon's initial launch in December last year was viewed by some analysts as lackluster, the announcement on Thursday confirms expectations that the e-commerce giant would improve its offer in Australia. That will present a renewed challenge to Australia's existing retailers.

"Sydney represents another important development for our growth strategy in Australia, following a steady and progressive increase in customer demand," Robert Bruce, Amazon's Australia operations director, said in a statement.
