Audi AG (NSU.XE) Chief Executive Rupert Stadler was arrested on Monday, a company spokesman said.

"We confirm that Mr. Stadler has been preliminarily arrested this morning," the spokesman said, adding that a hearing to decide over possible pre-trial detention was continuing.

"Mr. Stadler is still presumed innocent," the spokesman said.

German prosecutors had named Mr. Stadler and one other Audi executive as a suspect on suspicion of fraud and false advertisement in the car maker's continuing emissions scandal a week ago.

Audi, Volkswagen AG's (VOW.XE) luxury car maker, declined to comment further on the issue, citing the ongoing investigations.

A Volkswagen spokesman also confirmed the arrest.
