ENI SpA (ENI.MI) said Friday that it will jointly develop a technology to convert natural gas into synthesis gas with Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (2010.SA).

Synthesis gas is an intermediate product used in the production of higher-margin fuels and chemicals such as methanol.

The aim of the partnership is to bring down capital and operational expenditure in the conversion process, while simultaneously reducing the companies' carbon footprint, Eni said.

Eni and Sabic will initially construct a demonstration plant inside one of Eni's facilities.
