Eni SpA (ENI.MI) said Tuesday that it has started production at Egypt's Baltim South West gas field.

A first well, BSW1, has been started up, and the field is now producing 100 million standard cubic feet per day, the Italian energy company said.

Eni expects the drilling of five more wells with the goal of reaching the production target of 500 million standard cubic feet per day by the second quarter of 2020.

The overall gas potential from the Baltim South West field is approximately 1 trillion cubic feet of gas in place, Eni said.

Eni holds a 50% stake in the project through its subsidiary Ieoc, while BP PLC (BP.LN) holds the other half, the company said.
