Daimler Truck AG and Linde PLC said Thursday that they are working on developing liquid-hydrogen refueling technology for fuel-cell-powered trucks.

The commercial-vehicles maker and the industrial-gases company said they will work with a new approach to handle liquid hydrogen and aim to improve the refueling process.

Under the agreement, the companies plan the first refueling at a pilot station in Germany in 2023 and plan to use the new process for Daimler's Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck.

The companies "expect the use of hydrogen-powered, heavy-duty trucks to be a reality in the very near future," said David Burns, Linde's head of clean hydrogen.

Daimler Truck and Linde didn't disclose financial terms of the team-up.
