TotalEnergies SE said Thursday it has partnered with automotive supplier Valeo SE to work on a liquid battery cooling system for electric vehicles.

The French energy major said the companies will join forces to develop a way of cooling batteries from within with a liquid coolant, something current technologies don't allow.

TotalEnergies said it has developed a coolant that can be in direct contact with battery cells. The fluid is dielectric, which means it doesn't conduct electricity and therefore it doesn't pose safety risks, it said.

Valeo will use its expertise in thermal systems to work out a way to integrate the coolant within the electric vehicle battery pack, TotalEnergies said.

The battery innovation will boost electric vehicles' efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint, TotalEnergies said.
