International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Friday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged down 0.8% to 130.03. The European index ticked down 0.6% to 122.14. The Asian index slipped 1.2% to 156.27. The Latin American index lost 1% to 180.08, while the emerging-markets index dropped 1.7% to 269.13.

ArcelorMittal SA was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The steelmaker edged up 1% after it said that it had met with unions in Spain to discuss proposals to put employees in the country on short-time work as the company deals with steel-production cuts amid a slump in demand.

Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca PLC edged down 0.2% following a flurry of news. The company said nirsevimab, a treatment for the prevention of respiratory syncytial virus lower respiratory tract disease in infants, has been recommended for approval in the European Union, and its Evusheld medicine has been recommended for marketing authorization in the EU for the treatment of patients with Covid-19.
