FTSE 100 Rises in Early Trade; Oil Stocks Are Up
The FTSE 100 rises 0.2% to 7142.78 in early trade as equities
are helped by easing fears about the Omicron variant of Covid-19,
though concerns linger about prospects of early monetary tightening
by the U.S. Federal Reserve. "Markets have regained some poise at
the end of a difficult week which was marred by Omicron fears and
an increasingly hawkish outlook from central banks," Richard
Hunter, head of markets at interactive investor, says. Even so,
uncertainty remains and volatility is likely to stay elevated, he
says. Rises in oil prices boost heavyweight oil-linked stocks, with
BP the biggest riser, up 2%, though mining stocks are mostly lower.
Easing virus fears lift travel stocks, with British Airways owner
International Consolidated Airlines up 1.9%.
