FTSE 100 Edges Higher After Fed's Powell Signals Smaller Rate Rise

0928 GMT - The FTSE 100 rises 0.2% to 7590.48 after U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signaled on Wednesday that the pace of rate increases could slow in December. The U.K. index underperforms its European counterparts, however, as heavyweight oil stocks, miners and banks fall. "Risk-on sentiment has lifted global equity markets following dovish comment from Fed Chair Powell," writes Victoria Scholar, head of investment at Interactive Investor. November was "a strong month all round," with the FTSE 100 logging its best monthly performance in two years, she says. Consumer-focused stocks are broadly higher, with Ocado up 7.8%. Pearson is the top faller, down 3.9%. Among banks, Standard Chartered falls 2.6%, HSBC by 1.7%. Oil giants Shell and BP lose 1.6% and 1.4%, respectively. (jessica.fleetham@wsj.com)
