Daniel Alegre, the departing chief operating officer of Activision Blizzard Inc., plans to join Yuga Labs, the start-up behind some of the highest-profile collections of non-fungible tokens, as chief executive officer.

Yuga Labs is the home of NFT collections that include Bored Ape Yacht Club and CryptoPunks. Mr. Alegre will take over as CEO some time in the first half of next year, the company said.

Mr. Alegre will succeed Nicole Muniz, who will stay on as a partner and strategic adviser to Yuga Labs. Mr. Alegre will work closely with Yuga Labs co-founders Wylie Aronow and Greg Solano.

Last week, Activision said Mr. Alegre told the company that he plans to step down at the end of his current term of employment, which expires March 31.

Mr. Alegre has served as Activision's president and operating chief since April 2020, according to his LinkedIn profile. Before that, he served as president of retail, shopping and payments at Alphabet Inc.-owned Google.

Activision has recently agreed to be bought by Microsoft Corp. in a cash deal valued at $75 billion, though the Federal Trade Commission has sued to block the deal, saying the acquisition would harm competition.
