13:43 ET -- Alphabet Inc. is one of the most mentioned companies in the U.S. across all news items in the last 12 hours, according to Factiva data. The parent company of Google said it plans to cut roughly 12,000 jobs, about 6% of its workforce. "Over the past two years we've seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today," Alphabet Chief Executive Sundar Pichai wrote to employees. The cuts follow layoffs at tech companies including Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. Dow Jones & Co. owns Factiva. (josh.beckerman@wsj.com)
