Bayer AG said Monday that the U.S. Supreme Court has requested the views of the Solicitor General on behalf of the U.S. in a case involving its Roundup herbicide.

The German pharmaceutical and chemical company, which for years has fought a slew of cases over the weedkiller, said it is encouraged by the Supreme Court's move, which follows a petition by Bayer to review the verdict in Monsanto Co. v. Hardeman.

"Now that the Supreme Court has requested input from the Solicitor General in this case, we will not entertain any further settlement discussions with plaintiff lawyers that are representing a substantial number of Roundup claims," the company said.

Bayer maintains that Roundup, which it acquired when it bought agrochemical company Monsanto for $63 billion, doesn't cause cancer.
