U.K. satellite company OneWeb said Sunday that it and telecommunications group BT Group PLC have signed an agreement to explore providing digital-communication services to rural areas in the U.K.

The companies will consider opportunities to deliver OneWeb's connectivity services from low Earth orbit satellites to businesses and households in difficult to reach locations around the U.K. as well as to develop new services in other markets for BT's global customers, OneWeb said.

London-based OneWeb--which is backed the U.K. government, India's Bharti Global, Japan's SoftBank Group Corp. and France's Eutelsat Communications--competes with Elon Musk's Starlink, which in November last year received a satellite-network license from U.K. regulator Ofcom.
