Rocket Lab USA Inc. said Wednesday it was chosen by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to launch several cubesats in support of a new weather observation program.

The launches will support NASA's Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation Structure and Storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats, or Tropics, mission, Rocket Lab said. The constellation of satellites will be used to target the formation and evolution of tropical cyclones, including hurricanes, the company said.

Rocket Lab said two dedicated missions will launch on Electron rockets from Virginia's Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA Wallops Flight Facility. The launches are scheduled to take place no earlier than May 1, the company said.
