SYDNEY--Primary Health Care Ltd. (PRY.AU) said Peter Gregg had resigned as chief executive after he was charged by the securities regulator with allegedly falsifying documents during his time as an executive of Leighton Holdings, now Cimic Group Ltd. (CIM.AU).

In a statement late Friday, Primary said Mr. Gregg would remain in the role until a successor was found, with the company looking at candidates internally and externally.

On Tuesday, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission said Mr. Gregg is due to appear in a Sydney court on Jan. 31. Primary said at the time that Mr. Gregg has denied the allegations, which date to his tenure at Leighton in 2011.

"Peter has done an excellent job as Primary's CEO and has successfully led the company through a significant period of change and transformation over the past two years," said Rob Ferguson, Primary's chairman. "Under Peter's leadership, Primary has repaired its balance sheet, divested nonā€core assets, developed new offerings for healthcare practitioners and begun diversifying revenue streams."
