Minara Resources Ltd. (MRE.AU), one of Australia's largest nickel producers, said Monday Peter Coates has resigned as chairman with immediate effect after almost three years in the position.

Deputy Chairman Malcolm Macpherson will assume the role of chairman on an acting basis until a replacement is elected, the company said.

Coates was appointed as a non-executive director in April 2008 and chairman in May of that year, having previously been chief executive of Xstrata PLC's (XTA.LN) global coal business until December 2007.

No reason was given for Coates' resignation in Minara's brief statement to the Australian Securities Exchange.
