FRANKFURT--Germany's producer prices surprised on the upside in November as energy prices remained unchanged from October, data from the Federal Statistics Office showed on Friday.

Producer prices in Europe's largest economy were stable on the month in November and fell 0.9% on the year, Destatis said. Economists had forecast producer prices falling 0.2% on the month and declining 1.1% on the year. In October, producer prices fell 0.2% on the month and 1.0% on the year.

Energy prices rose 0.5% on the month, but fell 3.1% from the same month of last year. The statistics office said that without energy, producer prices were 0.2% lower on the month and 0.2% on the year.

Prices at the factory gates have an effect on but don't translate directly into prices paid by consumers.
