Republic Services Inc. (RSG) said earnings more than tripled in the fourth quarter, boosted by lower fuel costs and improved pricing.

Shares of the company were inactive after hours.

For the current fiscal year, the waste-management and recycling company said it expected adjusted per-share earnings of $2.13 to $2.17, straddling analysts' expectations of $2.16 and above 2015 earnings of $2.06. Republic Services said it expected revenue to increase between 2.5% and 3% for the year; analysts, on average, were expecting 3%.

For the quarter ended Dec. 31, Republic Services earned $172.3 million, or 49 cents a share, up from $50.3 million, or 14 cents a share, a year earlier. Earnings excluding items were flat year-over-year at 50 cents.

Revenue increased 2.7% to $2.29 billion.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of 49 cents a share on revenue of $2.3 billion.

The company has expanded productivity efforts, including use of natural gas and automated trucks with a single operator.
