Waddington's, Canada's most diverse auction house, opens its spring auction season with its Canadian Fine Art Auction on May 25, 2015 at their Toronto gallery. The first of seven fine art auctions offered this spring; the season includes major auctions of Asian, International, and Inuit Art; Decorative Arts and Fine Jewellery. Canadian Fine Art Auction – May 25, 2015 Following Waddington's history of xx years of presenting fine Canadian art at auction, the May 25 Canadian Fine Art Auction features important works by the Group of Seven, Painters 11 and other major schools. In addition, we are pleased to offer works by artists who appear more rarely on the secondary market such as Harold Klunder, Yves Gaucher, John Meredith, Lemoine FitzGerald, Frances Loring and Joyce Wieland. Auction Highlights Cornelius Krieghoff, 'Ice Harvest' Estimate $60,000 - 80,000. The Legendary Montreal art dealer, William Watson, described this work as "a perfect example of the master's art". Alexander Young Jackson, O.S.A., R.C.A. 'Pont Royal, Paris' Estimate $25,000 - 30,000.   A beautiful example of Jackson's interpretation of a French subject - Le Pont Royal - done a la mode, in the Impressionist style, which was then still considered far too radical for Canadian collecting tastes. John Meredith 'Voyage' Estimate $20,000 - 30,000 A rare and heretofore unknown painting by one of Canada foremost colourists. Waddington's has also located and borrowed, from a private collector, the sketch that inspired this powerful and energetic painting. The two will be exhibited together for the first time at our public view.   The full Canadian Fine Art catalogue may be viewed at: http://canadianart.waddingtons.ca/auctions-150/Canadian-Fine-Art-Auction Date and Times Auction Monday, May 25, 2015, 7 pm Public Preview Friday, May 22, 2015, 12 noon to 5 pm Saturday, May 23, 2015, 12 noon to 5 pm Sunday, May 24, 2015, 12 noon to 5 pm Monday, May 25, 2015, 10 am to 12 noon Inuit Art – June 1, 2015 Waddington's is Canada's most prolific auction house specializing in Inuit Art.  Since its first auction of this iconic Canadian art form in 19xx, Waddington's has set records and sold extraordinary works by Canada's leading Inuit artists.  This spring Waddington's offers a superb collection of works from across the Arctic, from the classic period to contemporary. Auction Highlights Tattooed Woman, Pitseolak Ashoona (1904 – 1983) Cape Dorset Stonecut, 1963 Estimate: $3,000—5,000 This simple yet powerful image of an Inuit woman illustrates the artist and printmaker's attention to detail and artistry.  There is a sense of movement evident in what would otherwise be a static portrait. This sense is facilitated not only by the tilt of the woman's head, but also by the intersecting lines of the voluminous parka, facial tattoos and features.    Growling Polar Bear, Pauta Saila (1916 – 2009) Cape Dorset stone, ivory, c. 1975 Estimate: $35,000—40,000 Perhaps what is most notable about this work is its sheer mass.  Standing on two legs, and with its head turned completely to the right this bear is almost regal if not quietly powerful.   The full Inuit Art catalogue may be viewed at: http://inuitart.waddingtons.ca/auctions-167/Inuit-Art-Auction Date and Times Auction Monday, June 1, 2015, 6 pm Public Preview Saturday, May 30, 2015, 11 am to 5 pm Sunday, May 31, 2015, 11 am to 5 pm Monday, June 1, 2015, 10 am to 12 noon Asian Fine Art – June 8, 2015 Featuring over 360 lots of Fine Asian Art, the focus of the June 8 auction is the 80+ superb scroll paintings from the Qing Dynasty and the 20th century from various prominent collections discovered in Vancouver, Montreal, New York, and Toronto.   Additional highlights A Large Ming-style Huanghuali Three-Drawer Coffer Table, Liansanchu, 19th Century Estimate: $30,000—40,000 A wonderful example of a three-drawer coffer table; not only is it rare for its impressive size, but also for its expensive huanghuali material.
