Applications MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/
-- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:MIPS), a leading provider of
industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital
consumer, networking, personal entertainment, communications and
business applications, today announced that the Hong Kong Applied
Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI)
has licensed the low-power MIPS32(R) M4K(R) processor core for the
development of advanced H.264 video processing applications.
ASTRI's IC design team will design SoCs that focus on
next-generation mobile technology, multimedia and performance
computing solutions for media processors, portable media players,
smartphones, set-top boxes and DTV -- markets where MIPS holds a
significant leadership position. "With the emergence of H.264 as
the preferred standard for high-quality media distribution and
compression, our customers require video processing solutions that
offer lower power consumption and system costs without sacrificing
performance," said Raymond Chiu, vice president at ASTRI.
"Leveraging MIPS' commanding presence in digital consumer
applications and the area and power efficiency of the powerful M4K
core enables us to deliver innovative designs that shorten
production cycles and accelerate time-to-market." "Video is an
increasingly critical component of the services delivered to the
digital living room, and we're excited to be part of ASTRI's
groundbreaking efforts in furthering the development of
next-generation video processing technology," said Brad Holtzinger,
vice president of worldwide sales at MIPS Technologies. "Our
collaboration gives chip designers ready access to superior
technology that combines design flexibility and high quality video
with low power consumption." MIPS Technologies offers SoC designers
a comprehensive range of MIPS-Verified(TM) solutions for
high-performance, low-power, cost-effective consumer applications.
The small, high-performance M4K core offers a superior solution for
multi-CPU SoC designs, which are becoming increasingly popular in
next-generation networking and broadband applications. About ASTRI
