Processor Maintains MIPS' High Performance Tradition at Speeds
beyond 2.0 GHz MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/
-- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:MIPS), a leading provider of
industry-standard processor architectures and cores for home
entertainment, communications, networking and portable multimedia
markets, today announced that its high-performance MIPS64(R)
architecture is powering the new XLP(TM) Processor from RMI
Corporation. The XLP Processor, introduced separately by RMI today,
is reportedly the highest performance per watt multi-core processor
in the industry based on the MIPS64(R) instruction set. RMI, a
leading provider of high-performance processors for communication
and media rich applications, announced that the XLP Processor uses
a MIPS64 compatible superscalar, simultaneously multi-threaded
processor core with out-of-order processing capabilities. Many
next-generation applications, including security appliances, L4-L7
switching, storage networking, 3G/4G wireless, small business
networks and others require extremely high levels of processor
performance. Performing at speeds greater than 2.0 GHz and
providing a 3x performance per watt improvement over the previous
generation processor, the XLP Processor is targeted at OEMs
developing these next-generation products. The XLP Processor core
architecture is optimized for both data plane and control plane
processing, and is developed on a 40nm process technology. "With
the MIPS architecture, we not only get an acknowledged performance
advantage, but also scalability, flexibility, functionality, and a
robust ecosystem of software and tools," said Behrooz Abdi,
president and CEO, RMI Corporation. "Our new XLP Processor enables
a broad set of application-specific features for a range of
high-performance applications including those in the storage,
networking, telecom, wireless and enterprise markets. The XLP
Processor has the most advanced architecture and is the highest
performing product family in the embedded market." "RMI continues
to push the envelope for the industry in terms of performance in
its processors, and we are pleased to acknowledge this latest
milestone in our long-term relationship," said John Bourgoin,
president and CEO, MIPS Technologies. "It is exciting to be an
integral part of the development of the XLP Processor. MIPS
Technologies has long been known as the industry's high-performance
leader, and this announcement from RMI continues that legacy. We
look forward to continuing to partner with RMI as it brings new
generations of groundbreaking MIPS-Based(TM) products to market."
