Chinese firm AUCMA Electric Vehicle Co. Ltd has selected Sevcon (Nasdaq:SEV) as the motor controller supplier for its new light truck, the A-2.

Aimed at municipal fleets in both domestic and overseas markets, the new A-2 light duty truck is powered by a 72V 16kW AC motor and Sevcon will supply its Gen4 digital motor controller with regenerative braking technology to the company based in Qingdao, Shandong Province.

AUCMA EV CEO Raymond Zhu said: "The Sevcon controller is perfectly suited for the A-2 truck application with adjustable parameters that allow us to tailor the performance to any specific truck type, from flatbed to cargo box vehicles. The customer support we have received from Sevcon has been exceptional and the company has worked hard to ensure the controller will work effectively across our applications."

The electric drivetrain gives the A-2 a range of up to 150 kilometres and a top speed of over 50kph. The A-2 can be fully recharged via a 220V 30A socket in 8 hours, with the onboard charger safely switching off when the battery is fully charged.

"We were delighted to work with AUCMA EV on its new A-2 electric truck, which marks another customer application for our Gen4 controllers," said Sevcon President and CEO, Matt Boyle. "We believe that there are huge opportunities for electrification in the commercial vehicle segment and are looking forward to seeing the A-2 in action both in China and overseas markets, such as the USA."

The A-2 is expected to go into service in municipal fleets operated by local authorities in China, but will also be exported. AUCMA EV will ship part-assembled A-2 trucks to the USA, where they will be completed and sold from a base in California.

Forward-Looking Statements

Forward-looking statements in this release about Sevcon's selection by AUCMA EV to supply Gen4 controllers for the A-2 electric truck are subject to risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from those we anticipate. In particular: global demand for electric vehicles may not grow as much as we expect; our customers' products may not be as successful as those of other entrants in the electric vehicle market who are supplied by our competitors; and we are dependent on a few key suppliers and subcontractors for most components, sub-assemblies and finished products, and we may not be able to establish alternative sources of supply in time if supplies are interrupted. Please see the company's most recent forms 10-K and 10-Q on file with the SEC for further information regarding Sevcon's risk factors.
