Building designed to attain LEED Certification
from the U.S. Green Building Council
SUEZ Environnement North America, the parent company of United
Water and the North American subsidiary of the second largest
environmental services company in the world, today opened a new
corporate office in Paramus, NJ. To align with its mission to
enable a secure, resourceful future for all, the office building is
designed to attain a certification in Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) from the U.S. Green Building
Council.
The green building will be occupied by 320 employees providing
corporate, technical and managerial services to the company’s
business units which provide industry-leading water and waste
management solutions for municipalities and industries in the
entire water cycle and the circular economy. The move will bring
employees currently working in various locations throughout the
region into a single workspace designed for collaboration.
“As businesses and consumers have come to expect more in
resource management, SUEZ Environnement has grown to adapt to
gathering resource challenges,” said Bertrand Camus, CEO. “We have
a great success story in New Jersey. We have grown over the past
century from a local water service provider to the international
company we are today. This new move positions us to further
capitalize on a wealth of opportunity in the broader North American
market.”
In 2014, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority approved
a $5.5 million state tax break to keep the company and its jobs in
New Jersey. The open-building layout in Paramus will house all
current employees, 15 new positions and dozens of workstations to
accommodate regular visiting employees from operations across the
country and the world.
“The Christie Administration and the Economic Development
Authority made it possible for us to remain in New Jersey, where
our headquarters has been for over a century,” said Camus. “While
we had attractive offers from outside the state, officials from the
state worked diligently to keep us in northern New Jersey. Our
location between two major highways gives us quick access to New
York City as well as to major airports. This is important since we
serve nearly three million people in the New York metropolitan
area.”
“Other states would have been happy to welcome the hundreds of
jobs we are celebrating today. But when the time came to create a
new headquarters, SUEZ Environnement chose New Jersey. They saw
strengths like our quality schools, highly skilled workforce and
our Administration’s business-friendly policies and outreach,” said
Acting Governor Guadagno. “Together, we worked to develop a
solution to keep this company – along with 320 jobs – right here in
New Jersey where it belongs. So, while SUEZ makes a commitment to
New Jersey, I am here to demonstrate that New Jersey is making a
commitment to SUEZ.”
“As the largest county in New Jersey, in the heart of the
Northeast Corridor and minutes from New York City, Bergen County is
an ideal place for businesses to locate and prosper,” said Bergen
County Executive James Tedesco. “United Water is a great success
story. Founded in 1869 as Hackensack Water Company, it has grown
over the past century to become one of the largest water utilities
in the U.S. We are pleased that Bergen County will continue to be
home to the SUEZ Environnement group.”
“I am pleased to welcome SUEZ Environnement to Paramus, at the
crossroads of Bergen County,” said Mayor Rich LaBarbiera. “Our new
corporate neighbour will be actively involved in our community
while contributing to our vibrant economy.”
In order to receive LEED certification, building projects must
satisfy prerequisites as well as earn points to achieve different
levels of certification. Additionally, SUEZ Environnement will
share data on the building's energy and water use to attain this
coveted environmental status.
