-- LSI Corporation (NYSE:LSI) today announced that its storage
technology is part of the $40 million Department of Defense (DoD)
Technology Insertion 2009 (TI-09) High Performance Computing
Modernization Program (HPCMP) contract with Silicon Graphics
Federal, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Silicon Graphics, Inc.
(SGI) (NASDAQ:SGIC). This marks the third consecutive year that LSI
technology has been included in the HPCMP award. The DoD will
implement a storage solution consisting of 45 SGI(R)
InfiniteStorage 4600 arrays, which are based on the LSI(TM)
Engenio(R) 7900 HPC storage system with 20 Gb/s InfiniBand(R) host
connectivity. The systems will be installed at leading defense
research and development sites throughout the United States,
including the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL), the U.S. Army
Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), the Air Force
Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Arnold Engineering Development
Center (AEDC), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC). The
NSWC also will deploy an SGI(R) InfiniteStorage 220 solution, based
on the LSI Engenio 1333 storage system, as part of the HPCMP's
Dedicated High Performance Computing Project Investments (DHPI)
program. The Engenio 7900- and 1333-based systems from Silicon
Graphics will provide the DoD with a total combined storage
capacity of over 2.4 petabytes of data. "Military research and
development is critical to the national defense," said Steve
Hochberg, senior director, worldwide HPC segment, LSI. "The DoD's
third consecutive inclusion of LSI-based storage solutions for the
HPCMP program speaks volumes for the proven performance and
enterprise-class reliability of our Engenio storage systems. With
over 80 petabytes deployed across a wide range of HPC environments,
they're trusted by the world's leading server OEMs and end
customers to support the most demanding application requirements."
Based on LSI seventh-generation XBB2 architecture, the 7900 HPC
storage system is ideally suited for computing environments that
store and utilize vast amounts of data for high-bandwidth and
mixed-workload applications. The system combines industry-leading
performance with advanced availability and reliability features to
ensure continuous high-speed data accessibility and protection
across a wide range of HPC workloads. "The DoD and HPCMP require
storage systems providing superior performance, scalability and
reliability to achieve breakthroughs in next-generation materials
and weapons development," said Jose Reinoso, senior director,
storage products, Silicon Graphics. "Our OEM relationship and close
collaboration with LSI is key to delivering world-class storage
solutions and benchmark results that allow us to continue to win
government contracts in a highly competitive environment." The LSI
