Honor bestowed for leadership through
innovation; ability to see over the horizon to transformation and
change
Plantronics (NYSE: PLT), a pioneer in wearable technology,
captured the WebRTC Visionary award for the second year running
during the 2013 WebRTC Conference and Expo held last week in Santa
Clara, Calif. Plantronics received the Visionary award for
demonstrating how a range of WebRTC experiences could be enriched
when used in conjunction with its advanced, contextually-aware
prototype wearable device, Wearable Concept 1™. In 2012, the
company was named a WebRTC visionary for demonstrating the
integration of its audio device functionality into WebRTC
environments – an industry first.
Wearable Concept 1, developed by PLT Labs™, features a variety
of embedded sensors, including three-dimensional head tracking,
free fall detection and tap detection. Developers can now leverage
capabilities in the device to create new applications and user
experiences with new iOS and Windows® APIs. More information about
Wearable Concept 1 can be found at PLTLabs.com. Developers who wish
to integrate headset functionality into WebRTC environments for
Plantronics solutions already in market may obtain free source code
at developer.plantronics.com.
“Plantronics’ vision of what the world could look like once
WebRTC and wearable technologies are commonplace is extremely
compelling,” said Phil Edholm, president and principal, PKE
Consulting and producer, WebRTC Conference and Expo. “That vision,
combined with their outstanding technology demonstration, convinced
the judges that they were the clear choice for this honor.”
“It’s extremely gratifying to be singled out as a visionary from
such an incredible group of WebRTC innovators,” said Joe Burton,
CTO and senior vice president of technology, development and
strategy, Plantronics. “WebRTC opens up a whole new world of
communications options, which makes it an ideal environment for our
advanced wearable capabilities. I can’t wait to see what kind of
game-changing applications our developer community will come up
with as both WebRTC and wearables continue to evolve.”
The WebRTC judging panel included: Brent Kelly of Constellation
Research; Tsahi Levent-Levi of BlogGeek.me; Lawrence Byrd, former
director of technology at Avaya; and Victor Pascuel Avila, former
architect at ACME Packet.
