           ABSA BANK - PRIVATE PLACEMENT OF ABSA BANK PREFERENCE SHARES 
                          (ABSP PREFERENCE SHARES)


Investors are referred to Absa Bank's announcements dated 20 March 2007 and 1
August 2007 relating to the monthly ABSP preference share issuance programme.



Absa Bank is pleased to announce that, in terms of the private placement, 23 994
of ABSP preference shares, at an aggregate value of R21 304 272,60 were placed
at a price of R887,90 at an effective dividend rate of 73,85% of prime.



The JSE has granted Absa Bank a listing of the 23 994 additional ABSP preference
shares in the Specialist Securities - "Preference shares" sector with effect
from Tuesday, 7 August 2007. The ABSP preference shares will be allotted and
issued, against receipt of payment from their central securities depository
participants, to institutions who applied for preference shares, on Tuesday, 7
August 2007.
