Telefonica Selects Metro Ethernet Solution From Lucent Technologies and Riverstone Networks for Multimedia Broadband Service Telefonica selects Lucent and Riverstone solution to deliver Video and Internet services over DSL to its customers MADRID, Spain, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) and Riverstone Networks (RSTN.PK) who today announced an agreement to partner to deliver converged Ethernet networks for service providers, said that Telefonica de Espana S.A.U ("Telefonica") of Spain, the leading service provider in Spain, has selected their combined Ethernet solution for the next phase of Telefonica's multimedia broadband service deployment. This is one of the first times that Ethernet, a more efficient, cost-effective, globally deployed network technology, will be used to deliver IP (Internet Protocol) services over broadband to homes. The Ethernet solution will provide a very efficient network infrastructure over which service providers such as Telefonica can deliver video and data services. Lucent is collaborating with Telefonica to roll-out Telefonica's "Imagenio" multimedia broadband service in major cities across Spain, offering IP Multimedia Services over DSL, including broadcast TV, video on demand, and internet access to residential customers. In this latest phase of the deployment, Lucent is supplying and integrating Riverstone's carrier Ethernet routers with Lucent Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) access concentrators to aggregate broadband traffic onto a converged Ethernet infrastructure in Telefonica's network. By doing so, Telefonica will have a simpler, more cost-effective network that can carry multiple types of traffic and services with high reliability and Quality of Service (QoS). The Lucent solution for Telefonica includes integration, engineering, installation and technical support for the next-generation Stinger(R) FS+ Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Access Concentrators and Riverstone Networks RS 8000 and RS 38000 carrier Ethernet routers.
