The Company was notified on 19 January 2004 that, following purchases of shares
on 16 January 2004, Morley Fund Management Limited is interested in 15,760,624
Ordinary 10p shares in Somerfield plc. This represents 3.16% of the issued
share capital of the Company.

Morley Fund Management Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aviva plc.
