Company Announces Fundraiser to Benefit California Coastal
Commission and Nevada State Parks Cooperative Association SAN
FRANCISCO, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Albertsons' announced today the
parks, playgrounds creeks, lakes and beaches its 475 California and
Nevada stores have each selected to clean-up as part of their 2006
Earth Day celebration. These sites were selected based on the
nominations customers made in Albertsons stores during the month of
March. Albertsons is hosting these Earth Day events to bring
awareness to the fact that plastic bags which are not disposed of
properly can become neighborhood blight and cause a problem for our
communities' landfills. In addition to Albertsons associates'
donation of time, Albertsons also announced that it will be
donating five cents of every reusable shopping bag sold between
April 21 and April 28 to the California Coastal Commission or the
Nevada State Parks Cooperative Association. Clean-up events will be
held between April 17 and April 30. Local event times are posted in
each Albertsons store. Sites were selected based on nominations
provided by Albertsons shoppers during the month of March.
Customers who choose to join Albertsons at the clean-up events will
be given reusable shopping bags. The California Coastal Commission
will supply Albertsons associates with resources and materials for
the clean-ups. These events are being held in association with
Albertsons' associate volunteer network, which in California and
Nevada, has already contributed over 425,000 hours of volunteer
time in their communities in the past year. Albertsons and its
family of stores operate under a set of core values that call for
the company and all of its associates to be responsible, involved
citizens by contributing to the quality of life in all of the
diverse communities served by the company's retail stores. In 2004
Albertsons provided nearly $67 million in cash and in-kind
donations to the communities it serves, with support focused on
hunger relief, education and development of youth, neighborhood
environments and health and nutrition. Albertsons is one of the
world's largest food and drug retailers. The Company's divisions
and subsidiaries operate approximately 2,500 stores in 37 states
across the U.S. and employ approximately 240,000 associates. Its
banners include Albertsons, Acme, Shaw's, Jewel-Osco, Sav-on Drugs,
Osco Drug, and Star Market, as well as Super Saver and Bristol
