CERNOBBIO, Italy--Chairman Giuseppe Recchi Eni SpA (E) Friday declined to comment on a report saying Italy's biggest energy company by market share is in talks with China National Petroleum Corp. to sell a stake of its large natural gas holding in Mozambique.

Mr. Recchi declined to comment on the sidelines of an Ambrosetti Workshop in Northern Italy.

Earlier in the week Bloomberg News, citing two people with knowledge of the matter, reported CNPC was in discussion with Eni about buying a 20% stake in the Italian company's gas assets in Mozambique in a deal valued at up to $4 billion.

Eni's chairman also confirmed the company isn't planning to spin off oil services company Saipem SpA (SPM.MI), which it controls.
