Bruker intends to move the new radiation detection business to its operations in Massachusetts. Professor William Dunn, the founder and CTO of PROTECT-US, will join Bruker Detection as ‘Vice President of Radiation Detection’. Dr. Dunn has an impressive track record in developing systems for protection against weapons of mass destruction. He received the prestigious Pacesetter Award from Argonne National Laboratory for his leadership in developing the PROTECT program that is utilized today in critical sites across the country. Dr. Dunn’s expertise in nuclear physics, coupled with his experience in developing protective systems, led him to design advanced technologies to detect and identify radiological hazards, weapons and devices.

The current Bruker radiation detection product line consist of dose rate and total dose measurement instruments, as well as special probes for defense reconnaissance, a small niche within the estimated $2 billion p.a. global market for nuclear radiation detection and monitoring instruments. The PROTECT-US radiation detection systems and integrated communications solutions will considerably expand the Bruker Detection product offerings to meet existing and future homeland security requirements for the detection of concealed nuclear weapons and for isotope identification, thereby expanding Bruker’s addressable markets in radiation detection considerably. Bruker Detection’s strong position in US, NATO and global CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives) detection markets is expected to expand the market reach for the radiation detection products of PROTECT-US.

The high-performance radiation detection products provided by PROTECT-US are able to differentiate in most cases naturally occurring radioactive materials and radioactive medical treatments from possible terrorist threats. This technology can differentiate likely threats from non-threats within persons, containers and even moving vehicles. The PROTECT-US radiation detection systems are engineered into various customizable instrument platforms, such as portable backpacks, rapid deployment bollards or stanchions, fixed location systems at entrances, roadways, rail lines, border crossings or ports, as well as vehicle, aircraft or helicopter mounted systems. The PROTECT-US systems can be provided as complete turn-key solutions that communicate and report actionable information to responsible government agencies.

William Dunn, Ph.D., Founder and CTO of PROTECT-US, commented: “This acquisition merges the advanced radiation technology and products from PROTECT-US with the global market reach and customer support of Bruker Detection. The combined team will be a leader in solutions to combat the spread of radiological and nuclear weapons, thereby making our country and those of our allies safer places.”

Mr. Sebastian Meyer-Plath, Executive Vice President of Bruker Detection, stated: “With increasing emphasis on concealed nuclear weapons detection and isotope identification in both homeland security and defense, this acquisition provides Bruker with state-of-the-art technology that is already fielded, thus considerably broadening our technology base and product portfolio. Today, it is not sufficient anymore to measure total radiation dose and type of radiation. Instead, the fast, sensitive and correct identification of the irradiating source provides the relevant agencies with the information necessary to distinguish harmless from potentially hazardous incidents.”

Going forward, the acquired products will be marketed as Bruker Radiation Sentry® detection systems. For more information on Bruker Detection Corp. and Bruker Corporation (NASDAQ: BRKR), please visit: www.bruker.com.
