Beyond Meat Inc. (BYND) shares surged more than 11% during
premarket trading Thursday after McDonald's Corp. (MCD) said it
plans to start testing the company's plant-based burgers at certain
locations in Canada.
McDonald's said it will conduct a 12-week test of the Beyond
Meat burger at 28 restaurants in southwestern Ontario starting
Monday. The burger, called P.L.T. for plant, lettuce and tomato,
will be priced at 6.49 Canadian dollars (US$4.90).
Fast-food restaurants have been rushing to add meat-free burgers
to their menus, hoping these higher-priced alternatives will help
them capture additional traffic and dollars even as suppliers have
struggled to fill all the orders.
McDonald's shares were flat premarket but are up about 20% this
year.
