The Carplastic facility was recognized because of its participation
in several voluntary environmental audits that were conducted by
PROFEPA, as well as for its numerous environmental initiatives that
extend beyond federal legislation. For example, the facility is
home to a wildlife habitat that protects various plant and animal
species that are native to the region. The Wildlife Habitat Council
(WHC) certified this land as an official Wildlife Habitat in 2003.
A total of 67 facilities representing 18 different companies were
candidates for the award, however, only 23 facilities were
recognized as recipients of the 2003 Environmental Excellence Award
in the country. This is the inaugural year for this award program
from PROFEPA. At a ceremony held Friday at Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc
Moctezuma facility, the award was presented by Fox and received by
Manuel Gonzalez, Visteon Mexico manufacturing director; Adalberto
Garcia, Carplastic human resources manager; and Lorenzo Torres,
Carplastic environmental engineer. Also in attendance at the
ceremony were Alberto Cardenas Jimenez, minister of the environment
and natural resources; and Jose Luis Luege Tamargo, environment
federal attorney. "We feel very honored to be recognized with this
award," said Gonzalez. "Environmental management is very important
to Visteon, and we are committed to conducting our business in an
environmentally sound manner. We apply our global policies and
practices with vigilance and we also meet or surpass applicable
regulatory and legal requirements anywhere we do business." The
Mexican Environmental Attorney's Office (PROFEPA), a branch of the
Mexican Environment and Natural Resources Ministry Office, seeks to
involve society and various organizations to ensure compliance with
environmental law, for example, containing the destruction of
natural resources. "In Visteon Carplastic we are committed toward
making sustainable use of renewable natural resources, efficient
use of non-renewable natural resources through eco-effective
planning, and the employment of design for environment (DfE)
disciplines," said Torres. Visteon's Carplastic operation has three
locations: Monterrey, N.L., Hermosillo, Son., and Cuautitlan, Edo.
de Mex. It specializes in the production and delivery of plastic
components and systems for the auto industry, such as instrument
