Georgia Power on Tuesday said equipment for the Vogtle Unit 3
has been energized, or permanently powered, which will allow for
testing of the systems at the nuclear plant.
The company said plant equipment had been running on temporary
construction power, and completing initial energization was a
significant milestone as the project moves from construction toward
system operations.
"Initial energization is a major first step in transitioning the
project from construction toward system operations," said Vogtle 3
& 4 Construction Senior Vice President Glen Chick. "With
energization complete, we can continue moving into the actual
testing phase for Unit 3."
Georgia Power said the project, which is located in Burke
County, Ga., is about 77% complete.
Last week, the company said it expects Unit 3 to be in service
by November 2021 and Unit 4 will be in service by November
2022.
Georgia Power is the largest electric subsidiary of Southern
Company (SO).
