PR Newswire (US)
DETROIT, April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- DTE Energy, parent company of
Detroit Edison and MichCon, is helping low-income customers apply
for the Home Heating Credit, a state energy credit that can help
offset the costs of natural gas or electricity used to heat homes
in the winter. The Home Heating Credit is based on household
income, the number of exemptions claimed and the home's actual
heating costs. Special exemptions may be available to customers 65
and older and to people with disabilities. Department of Human
Services recipients and people who receive other public assistance
also may be eligible for the credit if they owned or rented a home
or apartment in 2007. Customers are encouraged to call DTE Energy
toll-free at (800) 411-4348 for assistance in applying for the Home
Heating Credit. Before calling, customers should have available
their household income and their dependents' Social Security
numbers and dates of birth. DTE Energy will help customers apply
for the credit through Sept. 26. The deadline to file with the
state of Michigan is Sept. 30. In addition to this help, DTE Energy
offers a number of payment assistance programs to help customers
manage their energy bills and avoid service shut-offs. The company
can also help customers work with outside agencies that may provide
bill payment help. Customers having trouble paying their utility
bills should call DTE Energy at (800) 477-4747. DATASOURCE: DTE
