Mercedes-Benz AG, Nike Inc. and Starbucks Corp. are founding members of a new coalition of nine companies aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions no later than 2050.

The Transform to Net Zero coalition said Tuesday that the initiative would follow nine principles, including placing environmental goals at the top of corporate management, disclosing more data and additional investments in climate-change technology. The nonprofits Environmental Defense Fund and BSR are also involved.

"Our mission at Mercedes-Benz is CO2-neutral mobility," said Ola Kaellenius, chairman of the management board at Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz, in prepared remarks. "We are making good progress towards this end and we are determined to follow through."

The other members are shipping company A.P. Moeller-Maersk AS, cosmetics maker Natura & Co. Holding SA, home-goods giant Unilever PLC, software titan Microsoft Corp., food company Danone SA and Indian tech-service provider Wipro Ltd.
