Evraz Group SA (EVGPY) Chairman and Founder Alexander Abramov said merging with Severstal JSC (CHMF.RS) is a "good idea," the Financial Times reported Monday.

"I guess that this [the idea of an Evraz/Severstal combination] would have several advantages," Abramov told the newspaper in an interview.

A merger of Russia's two biggest steelmakers will create the world's eighth-largest producer by output, with a combined market capitalization of GBP12 billion, the newspaper reported.

Severstal declined to comment to the FT.
