ARCO, Montana Sign Conditional Agreement to Settle Natural Resource Damage and
Silver Bow Creek Remediation Claims

LOS ANGELES, June 19/ PRNewswire/ -- ARCO (NYSE: ARC) and the State of Montana
have signed a conditional settlement agreement in the state's Natural Resource
Damage (NRD) lawsuit against the company. The settlement, for $215 million,
also will resolve claims against the company for remediation at Silver Bow
Creek. The settlement is conditional upon successful negotiation of an
agreement between ARCO, the State of Montana and the United States relating to
that cleanup and upon court approval of both agreements.

This sites covered by this agreement were inherited when ARCO acquired Anaconda
Copper in 1977.

The state's remaining NRD claims are expected to be resolved through restoration
activities undertaken in connection with remediation at sites on the Clark Fork
River, the old Silver Bow Creek drainage in Butte, and portions of the Anaconda
site -- all located in Southwest Montana.

Over the years, ARCO and Montana community leaders have worked together to
transform Superfund sites at the Old Works, Warm Springs Ponds, and areas in
Butte, into recreational facitilities that are national models of remediation.

Since ARCO has previously accrued environmental costs for this settlement, there
will be no material effect on ARCO'S net income.
