Sharp launches LCD prototype with built-in NXT SoundVu(R) technology
Sharp Corporation, a leader in LCD displays, in co-operation with NXT licensee,
the Hosiden Corporation, this week announced the launch of a prototype four-inch
glass LCD screen with built-in NXT SoundVu technology for mobile applications.
The System LCD*, with embedded audio circuit, is unique in that it combines the
audio amplifier circuits on the same glass substrate as the LCD display panel.
The amplifier drives an NXT Distributed Mode Actuator (DMA)** to turn the screen
into the speaker, removing the need for external speakers. The result is a thin
and elegant product that is ideally suited for use with mobile devices that
require video and sound, including mobile phones, PDAs, portable DVD players and
mobile televisions.
Sharp is yet to indicate when this product will be market ready.
* System LCD with embedded audio circuit: The LCD display area and audio circuit
are integrated on one glass substrate using the CG-Silicon (Continuous Grain
Silicon) technology, which is co-developed by Sharp and Semiconductor Energy
Laboratory.
** Distributed Mode Actuator (DMA), is a patented loudspeaker technology
developed by NXT which uses a piezoelectric drive element in place of an
electromagnetic one to produce a smaller, lighter, more efficient exciter.
