Rexam completes acquisition of Latasa
Rexam PLC, the global consumer packaging company, is pleased to announce that it
has completed the acquisition of 89% of the share capital of Latasa SA. The
transaction was announced on 31 October 2003.
Latasa is the leading producer and supplier of aluminium beverage cans in
Brazil, Argentina and Chile, serving the brewing and soft drinks industries. The
acquisition of Latasa positions Rexam as the No 1 beverage can maker in Brazil
and makes Rexam the world leader in the manufacture of beverage cans.
Rexam intends to launch a public offer on the Sao Paulo stock exchange for
the remaining 11% of the shares as soon as the documentation has been agreed
with the Brazilian stock exchange authority, CVM.
In line with Rexam's single brand strategy, Latasa will now operate under the
name of Rexam Beverage Can South America. It will continue to be run as a
separate entity from Rexam's existing plant in Brazil until the anti-trust
position has been clarified. The relevant filings were made to the Brazilian
anti-trust authority, CADE, on 20 November 2003. Both Rexam beverage can
businesses in Brazil will be part of the Rexam Beverage Can Americas
organisation which is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.
