Expert To Spearhead Indoor Air Quality Initiative ATLANTA, May 23
/PRNewswire/ -- To further its mission to improve indoor air
quality, the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) has named
Carl E. Smith as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director.
This is a new position at GEI, an independent, non-profit

manages stringent testing for thousands of commercial and consumer
products so that they might earn the GREENGUARD seal of approval.
"Carl's broad-based experience in the office furniture
manufacturing industry and his expertise in public policy and
health advocacy will further expand the awareness and importance of
the GREENGUARD Certification Program," said Marilyn S. Black,
Ph.D., founder of GEI. "His ability to reach out to both public and
private entities and his understanding of the economic and health
implications of indoor air quality issues will support GEI's
national and international initiatives." As CEO and Executive
Director, Smith will represent GEI in both the public and private
arenas, develop strategic relationships with public interest/health
groups, government authorities, professional and trade
organizations, as well as with industry certification participants.
For more than ten years, Smith was employed at Steelcase, Inc., the
largest office furniture manufacturer in the world, where he held
various senior level positions including Director Corporate
Marketing and General Manager. Smith has served as a senior budget
analyst on the U.S. Senate Budget Committee and as a staff member
for the U.S. House Ways and & Means Committee. He has also
worked in public affairs for EDS Corporation and American Medical
International. Smith also has extensive non-profit experience
including as Chairman of the Board for the Glaucoma Research
Foundation, a global non-profit focused on finding a cure for
glaucoma. "I am proud to serve as CEO and look forward to creating
new opportunities for GREENGUARD's growth in established and new
markets," said Smith. "I also look forward to being the 'voice' of
GREENGUARD and addressing the silent and often hidden problems of
indoor air quality. I firmly believe that GREENGUARD has made an
impact in the larger effort to transform how buildings and homes
are constructed and how the products we use everyday can be made
with the least possible impact on people's health." About the
