Mobile carrier E-Plus has tasked Nokia Siemens Networks, a joint venture between Nokia Corp. (NOK) and Siemens AG (SI), to build its fast, LTE network, NSN said Tuesday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

NSN will also expand E-Plus's existing 3G, or third generation, network. E-Plus is the mobile carrier owned by Netherlands' telecom company Royal KPN NV (KPN.AE).

E-Plus Chief Executive Thorsten Dirks recently said the carrier plans to expand its LTE network this year, as rivals such as Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE.XE) and Vodafone Group PLC (VOD) move further ahead in offering the service. Competitor Telefonica Deutschland, with its mobile carrier O2, also offers LTE network access in some urban areas, and said Monday it would expand the network in the first half of the year.
