PR Newswire (US)
HONOLULU, April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Engineering students from 12
universities around the country will begin competing here today in
the conference finals of the American Society of Civil Engineers'
22nd Annual ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition. The winner of
these races will earn a spot in the national championships in North
Carolina this June. Before the concrete canoes could begin their
sail to the finish line, however, they had to get to the starting
line. Working together, Horizon Lines, LLC, and Horizon Logistics,
LLC, coordinated the door-to-door delivery of the competition
canoes from inland points in the continental United States to the
Port of Los Angeles for ocean voyage aboard a Horizon Lines
container vessel to Honolulu and on to final destination at the
University of Hawaii. Horizon Logistics coordinated with several
service providers to secure the best pricing for the project and
Horizon Lines arranged for transpacific carriage to Hawaii. "When
we have the opportunity to support worthwhile community activities,
we embrace our 'always delivering' promise for the community as
strongly as we do for our customers," said Mar Labrador, Senior
Vice President and General Manager, Hawaii and Micronesia Division
of Horizon Lines. "The ASCE event in Honolulu is a source of great
pride for the engineering students involved." The ASCE National
Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) provides students with a
practical application of the engineering principles they learn in
the classroom, along with important team and project management
skills they will need in their careers. The event challenges the
students' knowledge, creativity and stamina, while showcasing the
versatility and durability of concrete as a building material.
Teams qualify for the NCCC by placing first in one of the 18
conference competitions held throughout the United States during
the spring. The winners of the ASCE National Concrete Canoe
Competition are determined by compiling the team's total number of
points from the academic and race portions of the competition.
Academic scholarships totaling $9,000 are awarded to the winning
teams' undergraduate civil engineering program. Engineering
students from The University of Arizona; Arizona State University;
North Arizona University; Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo; Cal Poly,
Pomona; University of Southern California; University Of
California, San Diego; Cal State (USULA); Loyola Marymount,
University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Northridge; and San Diego State
University are competing in the conference championships at the
University of Hawaii. For more information, visit
