EFG International AG (EFGN.EB) is hiring former RBS Coutts Chief Executive Gerhard Mueller for its European private banking business, several people familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires Friday.

Mueller was ousted as long-standing CEO of Coutts, the private banking arm of Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC (RBS.LN), in a surprise move in May. He joins EFG, which Monday replaced CEO Lonnie Howell with U.K. private banker John Williamson as part of a larger strategic review, for a European private banking role, two people said.

The people said Mueller is likely to report to Alain Diriberry, himself a former Coutts executive.

RBS said Mueller was leaving that bank to pursue an executive role elsewhere, without elaborating.

A spokesman for EFG didn't comment; Mueller couldn't be reached for comment.
